  • Our school was fully accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) in our first year of operation and was reaccredited in 2002. This is a designation achieved by only seven percent of the early childhood programs in New Jersey. We have continued to meet NAEYC standards over the entire 11 years we have been in operation.  We are currently in the process of reaccreditation by NAEYC and NECPA.

  • We are recognized as an exemplary early childhood program.  The school was recognized in 2002 by the Doris Duke Charitable Trust and the Center for the Study of Social Policy (CSSP) for its support of families as well as children. We are one of only 21 programs in the entire U.S. so chosen and the only center in New Jersey. The Montclair Community Pre-K (MCPK) is recognized as a leader by the State of New Jersey Departments of Education and Human Services. Our school serves as the mentor program for the Strengthening Families Initiative, both in New Jersey and around the country.

  • Our curriculum focuses on developmentally appropriate skills and Kindergarten preparedness, to build a foundation for future academic excellence and a lifelong love of learning. The curriculum uses the educational framework of Harvard University professor, Dr. Howard Gardner, and his Theory of Multiple Intelligences.  Dr. Gardner's theories guide the curriculum, which is child-centered and experiential.

  • Most of our four year olds go on to the Montclair Public Schools where they have made the successful transition to kindergarten and are thriving.

  • We are dedicated to diversity.  Our students and faculty reflect the ethnic, economic and racial diversity of Montclair.

  • Our program is family friendly.  We provide extended hours to working families so that children can remain in one place during the work day.  Additionally, there is vacation care during holidays and a summer program run by the YMCA during July and August.  Our popular Friday night Pajama Club offers children a few hours of fun while parents spend an evening out.

  • The Pre-K is a true community school.  Parents and caregivers play an important role in our program.  In addition, our intergenerational program brings seniors and children together on a regular basis.  Local artists provide music, movement and visual arts education.  Elementary, middle, and high school students volunteer in our classrooms.

  • Our modern facility is bright and spacious with 12 classrooms specifically designed for young children and a large backyard park with playground and interactive gardens.

  • Located in the center of town, we are close to the Montclair Art Museum, the Public Library, the police station, as well as numerous other town treasures.  Regular walking trips out into the surrounding neighborhood enhance our curriculum as the children are welcoming throughout the town.

Our school day runs from 8:30am to 2:30pm Monday through Friday. In addition the MCPK program offers extended care for working families. Class size is based on NAEYC standards.  Each 4-year-old classroom has a child ratio of 1:10 with a maximum of 20 children.  Each 3-year-old classroom has a 1:8 ratio with a maximum of 16 children.

What is your philosophy on discipline?

We use a developmental approach that takes into account the feelings of the children and their classmates.  We are licensed by the NJ Division of Youth and Family Services and follow their guidelines for appropriate behavior management in our classrooms.

Yes.  The Pre-K is designed for children who are able to take care of their own toileting needs.  We assist children in everyday toileting routines, helping to reinforce good habits.

Outdoor play is an essential aspect of our program and all children must be prepared to participate in it everyday.
